The New York City Council changed the name to New York International Airport, Anderson Field in 1948. The airport was also referred to as Idlewild Airport by locals until the official name change to John F. Kennedy International Airport in December 1963. The airport opened with six runways and five terminals to serve its passengers.. John F. Kennedy International Airport is conveniently located about 22 miles from the center of New York. You can easily reach the city by car in approximately 50 minutes. Alternatively, the city can be reached from the airport by taking the AirTrain from JFK to Jamaica Station, then transferring to a subway train towards Manhattan.
