Red Flowering Gum Trees get some Attention! 1900 Monterey in St. Francis Wood. SOMA. Regular readers here may know that red flowering gums ( Corymbia ficifolia) are my favorite tree species in San Francisco. They have spectacularly vivid clusters of red, orange, pink or white flowers that are at their peak right now (peak is July and August).. Corymbia ficifolia is more often known as the red flowering gum. This small tree is endemic to Western Australia. The tree was first named by Ferdinand von Mueller in 1860 but he gave it the name Eucalyptus ficifolia.. Only more recently in 1995 did the name of the tree become Corymbia ficifolia. The red flowering gum is cultivated in abundance both locally and internationally.

The gum tree's foliage is made up of dense clumps of leaves growing at the end of the branches. Lemon-scented gum trees grow between 80 and 130 ft. (24 - 40 m). The white, pink, or copper bark sheds in thin flakes. Flowers growing on lemon gum trees are white and relatively inconspicuous.. Red-flowered Eucalyptus has been planted in Santa Barbara since 1900 and is now seen all over town. It is well suited to our climate, since it does best within a few miles of the ocean and is very drought tolerant. It is frost-hardy to about 25 degrees. Mature trees are found as street trees in the 1200-1900 blocks of Chino Street, the 100-800.
